What Should You Compare Besides Price on Auto Insurance?
The cheapest policy and the right policy are rarely the same thing. Here’s what to compare beyond the monthly price.
The short answer
Auto insurance is really a bundle of separate protections, and the monthly premium tells you almost nothing about how each one would respond in a serious accident. Comparing only price often means quietly accepting lower limits or larger gaps. The right comparison looks at what each coverage actually does — and what it would pay on the worst day, not the day you buy it.
Liability limits
Liability coverage pays for injuries you cause to others. State minimum limits are often far below the real cost of a serious accident. If a claim exceeds your limit, you can be personally responsible for the difference.
Property damage limits
Property damage covers damage you cause to someone else’s vehicle or property. Modern vehicles are expensive to repair, and low limits can leave you paying the difference out of pocket.
Deductibles
A deductible is what you pay before coverage responds. Raising a deductible lowers the premium — but only if you could comfortably pay that amount tomorrow. A deductible you can’t afford isn’t really savings.
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
A meaningful share of drivers carry little or no insurance. This coverage protects you when the other driver can’t pay, and it’s one of the most important protections to compare between policies.
